Color Seasons

Recently I've given away a lot of clothes to Goodwill. Sorting the bag of clothes, I noticed my change in color seasons - brown, fuscia, pink, aqua. A color season is my term for when I get crazy about a particular color and buy everything to match. Now I'm going into a new season - jade and golden yellow. We'll see how long it lasts. Maybe I'll change my avatar to match too.

What about you? What colors inspire you?

Our Player of the Month is trixmydog2! She and her husband have been together for 5 years and currently work together in the lobster industry. They have a dog named Trix, which gave rise to her username, trixmydog2. Need to know if a game's for you? Check out her reviews - she writes lots!

How were you introduced to video games and what was the first game you remember playing? How often do you play games?
Before computers were a household item I played ping pong on a Atari console. As far as computer games, the first game I purchased was the Da Vinci Code. Then I found PlayFirst and I was hooked on the Diner Dash games.

How long have you been a gamer?
Well, it must be thirty years or so (gee I'm getting old!)

Aside from playing games, what are some other ways you like to relax and unwind?
Dancing, long walks, barbeques with family and friends, and watching hockey and Nascar.

Mouse or joystick?
Mouse

What games are you currently playing?
Wedding Dash, Diner Dash Together, Sponge Bob Square Pants 2

What is your favorite game of all time?
That's a tough one! I would have to say Diner Dash: Flo on the Go.

Play with PlayFirst

I've been rather swamped at work lately. If it's not one thing it's another. Yall know how the story goes. However, the one good thing that comes out of being at the office late is getting to see what it is everyone else is doing or in our case - playing. You would think we'd be honing our Wedding Dash skills to try and catch up to RjX's scores, but surprisingly we're not.

Personally, I stick to Zenerchi because I like all the flashing lights, and blowing up blocks. The rest of the office however, is still playing Chocolatier and Dream Chronicles, trying to one up one another with their high scores.

Last night, I subtly implied that some of my cohorts couldn't beat our best customers. This of course sparked debate... and one that could only be settled with a Chocolatier Challenge Circle. And you're all invited!

Keep in mind, this is no ordinary Challenge Circle. You will be playing against the Producers (not the play), our CEO, our Developers, and an assorted cast of PlayFirst employees. The best of the best (like the movie).

So in the spirit of community, and fun competition, we cordially invite each and every one of you to play with us. Signing up is easy, just reply to this post, indicating whether or not you'd like to play and I'll take care of the rest.

P.S. - The cut off time to enter is whenever I decide to stroll into work Monday morning (8/27), so... about 8:30 AM PST. The Challenge Circle. You will receive an invitation sometime later that day, and the Challenge Circle begins 8/28 and ends 9/4.

P.P.S. - If Applesun decides to play, make sure she doesn't win. She's been walking around the office all high and mighty ever since she beat me in a tough match of this.

On Doodling

I've been getting back in to paper. Spending all day every day toiling away here in the pixel mines, it's easy to get stuck in a mouse-based paradigm. Point. Click. Copy. Paste. Paste. Paste. Paste. Point. Click.

Paper involves a little more dexterity. You have to point with your finger, or your pen, or you draw an arrow on the paper, pointing at something, which can be either on the paper or just near. You can copy by hand, by machine or by silly-putty. You can cut up paper with scissors, tear it to bits, fold it into an animal. You can stack it, file it, seal it, send it, brandish it or notarize it.

It's got a lot of affordances.

But best of all, you can doodle on it.

Say you're in a meeting about the brand new game everybody's fired up about, Tomorrow's Cheese. You're up to speed on your part of it, you're just waiting for a chance to say your piece. But you're not first up to bat and you don't want to look rude while other people get their time in the box. What can you do? You could play with your phone, you could stare intently at someone else or you could do what I do and doodle.

I like to see how long I can keep the point down while in motion before I have to lift it because I've sketched myself into a corner or it's my chance to blather. So maybe I don't have the most input at meetings; at least I've got my art collection to sell online if this whole pixel polishing gig doesn't work out.

In conclusion, get ready for Tomorrow's Cheese. It's going to be huge!

Vacation

Because work is play, I tend to explore hobbies or community interests during my vacation. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to snorkel off a beach in Hawaii just like everyone else. But if I have a limited amount of time and can't afford a real getaway, I find something challenging to do. At the end of August I'm going to volunteer to work with foster kids at a summer camp. Should be challenging and fun!

What about you? Do you have any plans for what's left of the summer?

The Video Game Diet

Some of us here are on a health kick to shed a few pounds and gain vitality. I have an easy weight loss strategy for those of you who want to try the video game diet:
  1. Play Wii Tennis, Golf or Boxing for your daily recommend 30 minutes of activity.
  2. Eat a healthy snack and then immediately distract yourself from getting more food by playing 20 minutes of Wedding Dash (It takes 20 minutes for you brain to realize you aren't hungry anymore.)
  3. Delay dessert by competing in a challenge circle. If you win, you can have 1 portion of any dessert you want.
  4. After you win a level. Drink a cup of water. This habit might have you drinking your recommended 8 glasses a day (or more)
The basic logic behind these strategies are eat a healthy meal, move, delay bad habits, and find alternative good rewards.

Let me know how it works!

On Vanity

Have you noticed how awesome my hair is? Oh, I know you can't see it there, under the bag I've got on, so you'll just have to take my word for it. It's thick and lush and it's got highlights brought out by the sunlight that you just can't buy in a bottle. It's simply breathtaking. So what have you got?

No, I'm not comparing coifs or styles or colors, here. What have you got to be vain about? Could you identify any song on the radio in three notes? Spin a pen? Construct iambic pentameter taunts? Tie a half-hitch in a cherry stem with your pinkies? Everybody's got something. What's more, everybody likes to be noticed for it. Some people are upfront about it, they'll say what they should be famous for. Others are more coy and wait to be spotted. Either way you slice it, you've got a claim to fame.

Maybe one you don't even know about. It's possible to go your whole life and not ever notice what it is that you can do better than anyone else.

Especially if it's something no one around you even knows to try to do. What if you've got a brutal hook shot but nobody in your neighborhood has a basketball hoop? What if you've got amazing sight range underwater but you never go SCUBA diving? Maybe what you think is your vanity point is just one of them and you've got an even bigger one you haven't even discovered yet.

What a waste that would be!

That's why I'm a big advocate of trying new things. Going to new places. Being new people.

As it turns out, I've tried a bunch of stuff, almost everything I could think of, and I excel at a lot of it. But I keep coming back to my favorite form of excellence and that's the hair I grew my own self. If you'll excuse me, I've got to get back to brushing it in the mirror.
