1980's Arcade 'casual' game remakes?

Posted: June 29, 2009 at 07:57
Anybody who loved the arcade scene in the 1980s please feel free to add to the discussion....Although.... I posted this in other places and nobody seems to be interested:( I guess it is because I am a 33 year old male and I do not fit into the typical casual gamer demographic....

Most of the arcade games from the 1980s are endless-they keep going and going and the levels get to a point where they are almost impassable.

Ms. Pacman and Pacman have 256 levels although most people do not get past level 8 or 9.
Q*bert has 36 levels, but once you beat all 36, you start over at level 9-1. Once you beat 9-4 for the second time, you go back to level 9-1 again and you keep going. (I know this because when I was 9, I set a record in a Florida Arcade by playing this game for 2 hours using 1 quarter!

Ok, so here is my list..

Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr, Donkey Kong 3

Q*Bert - There is a QBert 2004 and 2005 but they have problems with Vista.
Ms. Pacman- How about a quest mode?

Frogger, Super Pacman, Jr Pacman, Pacmania, Pacland, Popeye, Amidar, Rampage, Paperboy, Punchout, Joust, Pang, Mr. Do, Dig Dug,  Mappy, Flicky, Kangaroo, Road Runner,  Mousetrap, Elevator Action, Centipede, Rally X, Phoenix, Galaga, Zaxxon...

Also how about some Atari 2600 remakes- Enduro, Kaboom, Megamania, Keystone Kapers, Pitfall, River Raid and others... (Activision ruled at the time)

Anybody please add to the list!

ML,

Google the word MAME. There is a way to play identical versions of just about every Arcade game created between the years 1975-2000 right on your computer . (About 7,000 of them including clones!!) If you are really interested, let me know..BTW I loved your selection of games!

Not only can you play these identical, exact, games, but there are also cheat chodes, as well as save and load states so that if you are playing Ms. Pacman and you want to play through all 256 levels, you can save the game during any time and come back to it...

I published a game earlier this year called "The Adventures of Rick Rocket", which has elements of Asteroids, Galaga, Time Pilot, and other classic 80's space shooters. There are versions available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can find out more about the game here:

About Game shows, I would LOVE to see something that I used to watch on TV YEARS ago (my grandmother used to love watching game shows).  I think it was called $10,000 Chance of a Lifetime.  I can't find anything related to it at all, so I'm not even sure that's the right name, haha.

I used to love Pitfall, the Pac Mans (ya'll remember the cartoon that used to come on tv?), Qbert, Frogger... and there was a driving game that used to be at the arcades that I liked... can't remember what it's called though... maybe it was Pole Position?

Tigger, I think you are talking about a gameshow from the late 80s/early 90s called the one million dollar chance of a lifetime. I think it was the first gameshow to  give the contestants a chance to ultimately win $1,000,000. All I remember is that at the end of the show, a contestant has the chance to go inside this human sized vaccuum with money blowing around...

OR... you can google the word MAME and find out how to play and keep over 7,000 arcade titles that were produced between 1975-2005 at no cost.....

Carfixer, you're right!  Thank you!  Once you gave me the name, I was able to google it.  They did stand in a booth, trying to catch money, but it was mainly a word game.... with a great big letter board that contestants could push what letter they wanted (like an oversized, GIANT keyboard), to see where it fit in, in the word/phrase they were trying to guess!
