Have you been to Shadwood Academy? Have you been to the Armorer for a practice sword, and if so have you equiped it from the main menu? Same question for armor? Do you have bread? If you studied at the academy, do you have the side dash skill? You defense will be better with armor equipped. Your offensive melee skills will be better with a sword equipped. And even using side dash against chickens and spiders will get you out of a battle a winner fast.
