Yes, of course you can use play gold to make a purchase.
But you have to purchase the PlayGold. :)
Honestly, the PlayPass is the better deal. The only thing is you have to make sure that you're going to have the available credit on your card for them to charge it each month for the first 3 months. After that, you can cancel.
I say it's a better deal because, frankly, you're paying 1995 PlayGold for a game when you could only be paying 995 PlayGold - if you have the PlayPass.
You pay $13.95 for a month and get 1395 PlayGold. You purchase a game for 995 PlayGold, leaving you 400 in your account. The next month, your card is charged $13.95, you get another 1395 PlayGold, you spend 995 PlayGold on a game, you have a balance of 800.
Even if you don't buy just one game a month, the PlayPass is the way to go. I should say especially - because if you buy a lot of games, then the PlayPass would save you 50% on them.
